Be Social Savvy…
All too often I hear about how people have been negatively affected by something that they posted or clicked on in one of their many social networking sites.
One person, we’ll call her Mary, posted a picture of herself doing shots with her good friend, Gwen. Mary tagged Gwen in the pic so she could see it too. Unfortunately, all of Gwen’s friends could see the same picture now. Including her friend, Jon, who she had told she was staying in that night.. Jon, upset by this, unfriended Gwen in real life..
Then there was Mr. and Mrs. Smith from the posh neighborhood of Cashville, who decided to take a family vacation… Their High School aged son, Richie, posted several social updates including “Going away for a week tomorrow with the fam…” Then posted pictures of him and his family haveing a blast.. While they were sunning, somebody was helping themselves to the family’s jewels that Mrs. Smith kept in a drawer in her bedroom..
Both cases were innocent enough but both also had some major consequences. I am just as guilty as Mary and Richie sometimes. I think we get a lured into a false sense of security when it comes to social networking. We think that only our friends can see what we do. We try hard to impress and to make people LOL or ‘Like’ something that we did, that we don’t stop to think about what it is that we are posting.
Social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and Foursquare can be a fun way to communicate with our friends and family. We need to think more about what we are doing rather than why we are doing it.
